3 ripe but firm pears, peeled, cored, and sliced
1/2 cup unsalted butter
3/4 cup light brown sugar, packed

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

2/3 cup granulated sugar
2 large eggs, room temperature
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/4 cup whole milk
Instructions
1. Grease a 9-inch cake pan or line the bottom with parchment paper.
2. In a saucepan, melt 1/2 cup butter. Stir in brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Cook until sugar is dissolved and bubbly. Pour into the pan and arrange pear slices in a pattern.
3. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg.
