Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup creamy peanut butter (for frosting)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (for frosting)
  • 1/3 cup milk (for frosting)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • 3 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter chips (for topping)
  • 1/4 cup crushed peanuts (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease or line a 9×13-inch baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter with water. Stir until smooth and just bubbling.
  4. Pour hot butter mixture into dry ingredients and stir until combined.
  5. Add buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla extract. Mix until batter is smooth.
  6. Pour into prepared pan and spread evenly. Bake for 25–28 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with moist crumbs.
  7. While the cake bakes, make the frosting: In a saucepan, melt peanut butter and butter together until smooth. Remove from heat.
  8. Stir in milk and vanilla. Gradually whisk in powdered sugar until smooth and spreadable.
  9. Pour frosting over warm cake and spread evenly.
  10. Top with peanut butter chips and crushed peanuts. Let cool before slicing.
