Ingredients

Scale

2 cups warm water (about 105°F)

2/3 cup granulated sugar

1 1/2 tablespoons active dry yeast

1 1/2 teaspoons salt

1/4 cup vegetable oil or melted butter

5 1/2 to 6 cups all-purpose flour, divided

Extra butter (for brushing, optional)

Instructions

1. In a small bowl, dissolve sugar in warm water. Sprinkle yeast on top and let it sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.

2. In a large bowl, mix the yeast mixture with salt, oil, and 3 cups of flour. Stir until it forms a sticky batter.

3. Gradually add more flour, 1/2 cup at a time, until the dough pulls away from the sides and becomes soft.

4. Knead on a floured surface for 6–8 minutes, until smooth and elastic.

5. Place dough in a greased bowl, turning once to coat. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 1 to 1.5 hours.

6. Punch down the dough and shape into a loaf. Place in a greased 9×5-inch pan.

7. Cover and let rise again for 30–40 minutes, until it domes about an inch above the pan.

8. Bake at 350°F for 28–32 minutes or until golden and hollow-sounding when tapped.

9. Let rest in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack. Optionally, brush with butter.

10. Allow to cool completely before slicing for best texture.

Notes

This dough is quite flexible, perfect for beginner bakers.

You can adjust the sugar to make it less or more sweet depending on use.

Let the bread fully cool before slicing to avoid a gummy center.
