- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 1/2 cups cooked long-grain white rice
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup sour cream or cream cheese
- 1/2 cup beef broth
- 1 tsp dried thyme (or 1 tbsp fresh)
- 1 1/2 cups shredded cheese (Mozzarella, Provolone, or Gruyère)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a skillet, melt butter over medium-low heat and add sliced onions. Cook slowly, stirring often, for 25–30 minutes until caramelized.
- In a separate skillet, brown the ground beef over medium heat. Add garlic, salt, and pepper. Drain excess fat.
- In a large bowl, mix cooked rice, browned beef, half of the caramelized onions, sour cream, broth, thyme, and season to taste.
- Transfer the mixture to a greased baking dish.
- Top with the remaining caramelized onions and shredded cheese.
- Bake for 20–25 minutes until bubbly. Broil for 1–2 minutes for a golden cheese top if desired.
- Let rest a few minutes before serving.
