Description

French Onion Chicken Bake is a comforting, savory dish that combines the sweet depth of caramelized onions with juicy baked chicken, all topped with bubbly melted cheese. It brings the classic flavors of French onion soup into a hearty, satisfying main course perfect for family dinners or entertaining guests.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 3 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup beef broth (low sodium recommended)
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese (or mozzarella/provolone)
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions
In a large oven-safe skillet, melt butter over medium-low heat. Add sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for 25-30 minutes until deeply golden. Stir in minced garlic during the last 2 minutes. Remove onions and set aside.

  2. Sear the Chicken
Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). In the same skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Season chicken with salt and pepper. Sear 2-3 minutes per side until golden (do not cook through).

  3. Deglaze and Layer
Lower heat to medium. Add beef broth, scraping browned bits from the skillet. Return onions to the skillet, nestling around the chicken. Sprinkle thyme over the dish.

  4. Add Cheese & Bake
Top each chicken breast with shredded cheese. Bake in preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, until chicken reaches 165°F (74°C) and cheese is melted and bubbly.

  5. Garnish & Serve
Let rest for 5 minutes. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve hot.
