Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (85/15 preferred)
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch + 1 tablespoon cold water (slurry)
  • 4 slices provolone cheese
  • 4 sandwich buns (brioche or sturdy rolls)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon cooking oil (optional, for sautéing)

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add cooking oil if needed.
  2. Sauté diced onions and bell peppers for 5–7 minutes until softened. Add minced garlic and cook 30 seconds more.
  3. Add ground beef, breaking it up with a spatula. Cook until browned and no longer pink. Drain excess grease if necessary.
  4. Stir in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and ketchup. Let simmer for 4–5 minutes.
  5. Mix cornstarch with water and stir into the skillet. Cook for another 2–3 minutes until slightly thickened.
  6. Lay slices of provolone over the beef. Cover the skillet and let the cheese melt, about 1–2 minutes.
  7. While cheese melts, toast the sandwich buns in a separate pan or under a broiler.
  8. Stir the cheese into the beef or leave it melted on top. Spoon mixture onto buns and serve hot.
