  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup heavy cream (for ganache)
  • 8 oz semi-sweet chocolate, chopped
  • 2 cups fresh strawberries, sliced
  • Whole strawberries for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare three 8-inch round cake pans.
  2. Make the cake batter by combining dry and wet ingredients separately, then mixing together. Add hot water last.
  3. Bake for 25-30 minutes. Cool completely.
  4. Prepare the frosting by beating butter, sugar, cocoa, cream, and vanilla until fluffy.
  5. Assemble layers with frosting and sliced strawberries.
  6. Make ganache by heating cream and pouring over chocolate. Stir until smooth.
  7. Pour ganache over cake and garnish with whole strawberries.
