Ingredients

Scale

6 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced

2 tablespoons lemon juice

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/4 cup brown sugar

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

2 teaspoons apple pie spice

Pinch of salt

3/4 cup all-purpose flour

3/4 cup rolled oats

1/2 cup brown sugar

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon apple pie spice

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes

1/3 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

2. Peel, core, and slice apples evenly.

3. Toss apples with lemon juice, granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, apple pie spice, and a pinch of salt. Set aside.

4. In another bowl, combine flour, oats, brown sugar, granulated sugar, apple pie spice, and salt.

5. Add cold butter cubes and mix until the topping resembles coarse crumbs. Add nuts if using.

6. Grease an 8x8 or 9x9 inch baking dish.

7. Pour apple mixture into the dish and spread evenly.

8. Sprinkle crumble topping generously over the apples.

9. Bake for 40–45 minutes or until topping is golden and filling is bubbling. Tent with foil if topping browns too fast.

10. Let cool for 10–15 minutes before serving. Best enjoyed warm with vanilla ice cream.

Notes

Use cold butter for a crunchier crumble topping.

Granny Smith and Honeycrisp apples hold their shape best.

Let the crumble rest before serving to thicken the filling and boost flavor.
